Orvexus

Entry 02 — About

A record of how this practice came to be.

Orvexus grew out of a simple frustration: too many good stories fall apart under scrutiny because the trail behind them was never properly kept.

Orvexus was founded by reporters who had spent years watching promising investigations stall not for lack of a lead, but for lack of a method. A tip is not evidence. A hunch is not a trail. The gap between the two is where most stories quietly die.

We began by teaching a small group of colleagues how to request public records properly, how to read a registry filing without over-claiming what it proves, and how to keep a log detailed enough that someone else could retrace every step. That log format is still the backbone of what we teach today.

What drives the practice now is the same thing that started it: a story built on a documented, reproducible trail is worth more than one built on instinct alone, however strong that instinct might be.

SEC. A Values on file

01

Lawful by default

Every method we teach relies on channels that are open to any member of the public. We do not shortcut that line, even when it's slower.

02

Reproducibility

If another person can't retrace how a conclusion was reached, the conclusion isn't ready. We build that habit into every session.

03

Honest doubt

We treat a weakening premise as useful information, not a setback. Reporters who can revise their question tell better stories.
